NEW JAZZ VOICES FROM NORTHERN ITALY

On a recent trip to Italy Ken Waxman spoke with three leading Italian improvisers–pianists Alberto Braida and Fabrizio Puglisi, and violist Paolo Botti–about the current state of the scene there. The three of them describe a strong support network of fellow musicians with a DIY sensibility, and an improvising style that is informed by the Italian love of melody.

by Geoff Chapman

Toronto Star jazz writer Geoff Chapman spoke to the Toronto pianist on the eve of her concert at the CBC's Glenn Gould Studio. Although she first made her mark with her keyboard skills, these days Biali is increasingly in demand as a vocalist, supporting trumpeter Chris Botti on a recent tour and now backing up pop singer Paula Cole.
