2006 YEAR-END WRAP UP
Our contributors choose their Top 10s for 2006. Unlike last year there were no runaway favourites, but Randy Weston's African Rhythms Trio's Zep Tepi on Random Chance received the most mentions with three. Plus, we pay tribute to six major jazzmen who passed in 2006 and highlight three of the year's most memorable concerts.
FROM THE ARCHIVES July 1959 (Vol. 2, No. 3)
Montreal-born trumpeter and bandleader Maynard Ferguson passed away in August at the age of 78. He will be remembered for his intimidating ability to blow in the upper register, bopping and dancing on top of the staff. In this article from one of CODA's earliest issues, Ferguson chats with Dick Lazenby about his formative years, leading an in-demand big band, and Hollywood studio work.
